Earlier this month we observed World Cerebral Palsy Day or World CP Day. Let's unite and use our voices to bring attention to CP (Cerebral Palsy).
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral means “of the brain” and Palsy means a “lack of muscle control”.
Cerebral Palsy is a type of physical disability that affects a person's movement.
CP is one of the most common types of physical disability. There are over thirty-four thousand people in Australia with CP.
According to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Cerebral Palsy is a life-long physical disability due to injury of the developing brain. In most cases, brain injury leading to cerebral palsy occurs during pregnancy or at birth. There is no known cure.
How does Cerebral Palsy affect people?
CP is different for everyone. Except for in its mildest forms, it can usually be identified in the first 12-18 months of life. CP can range from weakness in one hand to an almost complete lack of voluntary movements, and can often be accompanied by additional disabilities. Severe CP can lead to difficulties in breathing, bladder control, and digestive issues.
The most common presentation of cerebral palsy or CP is called spastic hemiplegia, where one-half of the body has difficulty with voluntary movements. About 40% of people with CP have this type.
This means that people with CP may need assistive tech and adaptive equipment and vehicles with specialised modifications to get out and live their best lives and participate in their community.
How can I show support for the Cerebral Palsy community?
Worldwide there are over 17 million people with CP. Cerebral Palsy Awareness creates action around CP. By joining this cause, we can help those with CP have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else. Cerebral palsy is the most common childhood physical disability.
