This is a metallic silver 2006 Toyota Alphard Welcab Sloper in excellent condition.
We have owned this vehicle for just over 12 months (1st owner after import), which has been terrific.
It is comfortable for all passengers and has quick and easy wheelchair loading.
It's been great for medical appointments and social outings, and it's great on long trips.
We'd had enough of waiting for taxis and getting left high and dry for pick-ups.
After much research, we narrowed it down to Toyota's Voxy/Noah or Alphard rather than trying to buy a local vehicle and having to modify it.
We decided on an Alphard for the extra room, especially for our large powered wheelchair - definitely the right choice.
It has the wheelchair fixing location in the 2nd row on the left side.
The two 3rd row seats can also be easily folded and stowed neatly to the side when unused, creating a large cargo area behind the 2nd row.
We found that having the wheelchair fixed position in the 2nd row allows the wheelchair passenger easier communication with the driver and front passengers and makes them feel more included, rather than at the back alone.
It has sliding doors on both sides, passenger side powered.
The Toyota Alphard is specially designed by Toyota's engineers.
This 'Sloper' version has a hydraulic sloping mechanism that lowers the vehicle's rear.
The electric ramp then unfolds and touches the ground at a 9 - 12 degree angle, allowing a gentle incline for the wheelchair occupant to be loaded into the car.
The lowering and ramp are done using a remote control.
For locking the wheelchair in place and the OEM push-button retractable wire cables, it also has fitted the international standard 'Q-Straints' to meet Australian Design Regulations (ADRs) found in wheelchair taxis.
Four retractable belts are included (see photos).
It comes with the VSCCS Compliance Certificate (NSW Gov - Vehicle Safety Compliance Certification Scheme).
The 2.4L 4 Cylinder 2AZ-FE engine (similar to Camry/Tarago, etc) is strong, reliable, economical and quiet, especially on the open road.
The added weight of the 250kg wheelchair was hardly noticeable.
It drives very smoothly with dynamics that are more car-like than a van.
